Computed tomography (CT) of the maxillofacial region is performed on a Planmeca ProMax 3D scanner, which allows us to determine not only the anatomical features of individual structures but also their functional state. Experienced specialists perform CT of the maxillofacial region in various situations for diagnostic purposes or to monitor treatment progress.

This examination method is based on taking a series of thin-slice images by passing a low-power focused X-ray beam through body tissues; the images are captured by special sensors and, using software, converted into a 3D model on the monitor screen.

The advantages of CT as a diagnostic method include obtaining a detailed three-dimensional volumetric digital image without any inaccuracies and with minimal radiation exposure, comparable in effect to a brief suntan on a sunny day, which makes it possible to perform this examination when indicated even in children.

Diagnostic stages

  1. First, the doctor performs an examination with an oral inspection. This is necessary to determine the location of the damage and select the area of examination. At this stage, women are also asked about pregnancy, as this condition is the only contraindication for CT. 
  2. Dental computed tomography is performed using special medical equipment located in a separate room. To protect other parts of the body from the radiation, the patient is offered to wear a special protective vest.
  3. The head is fixed in a special position, and then the examination is performed, in which the person takes minimal part. The information from the scanner is transmitted to a computer, which processes the received data.
  4. The stage during which the image is processed, visualized on the monitor, and then analyzed by specialists. The doctor can rotate the image in different planes, zoom in and out to clarify details. The image can be saved in special digital formats for further use in monitoring treatment.
