For another three years, the German Research Foundation has continued the world's largest study to investigate the effect of a single implant to preserve a complete denture in the lower jaw, completely devoid of teeth. The total funding for the project, which began in 2012 at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel, is now about 1.275 million euros.
The study examines the possibility of installing a complete prosthesis on only one intermediate implant in the mandible as a vital alternative for elderly patients, as it can significantly reduce the financial costs and burden of restoring the function of the jaw, completely devoid of teeth. The denture is removed and released using the button on the implant.
Researchers at the clinic are also conducting further research to help promote and optimize the care of patients with complete dentures. In a new study, dentists in the center of Kiel seek to find out how effectively you can keep a complete denture in the lower jaw with additional dental implants . To this end, M. Kern and his team invite people over the age of 50, who are dissatisfied with the placement of prostheses in the lower jaw, despite the fact that the latter were clinically adequately developed, to participate in the study.
During the study, patients will receive three mandible implants during one surgical procedure. Later, a full prosthesis is attached to one of the implants, and then to the two implants in three months, and thereafter to all three implants in six months’ time.
One of the leading areas of modern dentistry was to restore the integrity of the dentition and the functionality of the maxillofacial apparatus with the help of implants. Despite the multi-stage and complexity of the procedure, more and more patients resort to this service, as it helps to almost completely eliminate defects and fully restore the aesthetic appearance of the person. In addition, implants do not require special care and are durable in use.
Given the fact that this procedure is especially in demand in elderly patients, various techniques are currently being developed to reduce the trauma of the procedure and improve the survival of implants.
This study again showed the relevance of this area and its application even in difficult cases, when completely missing teeth and restoring can be complicated due to a large number of related factors.
