Electromyography
or myography
Recording the electrical activity of muscles
at rest and during contractions

At the medical center "Estetik Dental", various diagnostic methods are available, including modern diagnostics in the form of electromyography (myography), which makes it possible to study the neuromuscular system and the function of the masticatory muscles by recording electrical potentials.

Electromyography (myography) is performed for various pathological conditions for the purpose of diagnosis and monitoring of therapeutic measures. This method is informative only in combination with other diagnostic methods and makes it possible to significantly complement data on the nature of the disease and the severity of changes.

When electromyography is performed:

• In therapeutic dentistry for periodontosis and periodontitis

• For complex jaw injuries

• To clarify the diagnosis during myoplastic procedures for persistent paralysis

• Often necessary in extensive inflammatory processes of the maxillofacial region

• In cases of dystrophy or hypertrophy of the masticatory muscles for differential diagnosis

• In cases of facial nerve injury to assess its conduction

• Used to study the bioelectrical activity of the masticatory muscles during prosthetic treatment

• To clarify the diagnosis during treatment of malocclusion

• Performed for monitoring during correction of developmental anomalies of the maxillofacial apparatus

Electromyography – is one of the modern methods for diagnosing disorders of the function of the masticatory and facial muscles in dentistry. This method makes it possible to obtain objective information about the condition of the muscular system.

Often, this method is indispensable during diagnostic evaluation of borderline conditions with pronounced symptoms such as pain syndromes and disorders of articulation and chewing.

Stages of diagnosis

  1. First, the doctor performs an examination with an oral inspection. This is necessary to determine the severity of changes and the need for correction.
  2. As a rule, this type of examination does not require special preparation. In addition, electromyography is a completely painless procedure, but in some cases discomfort is possible.
  3. Recording of the electrical activity of the masticatory and facial muscle system is performed simultaneously on both sides symmetrically. Special electrodes are attached to the skin in clearly defined areas. At the specialist's command, the patient moves the jaw in different planes. The obtained data are transferred to a computer.
  4. The stage during which the obtained data are processed, followed by analysis by specialists. The data are saved for further monitoring of treatment.
